Lame acronyms: The Second Coming

First Impressions

The original MDK was the game to introduce the zoomable sniper rifle to the gaming world. Apparently it was an alright game as well. This game isn't.

You'd expect a sequel to at least try to live up to the prequels expectations, but like the Star Wars prequel-sequel, this game doesn't.

Lasting Impressions

You start off as Kurt who has a suit which would otherwise look cool if it wasn't for his face. You have the Doc who makes up all the contraptions and the corniest jokes and you also have Max who is a dog with six arms and can use them all to fire guns (Max+Doc+Kurt=MDK, hmm...). All of them are hopelessly unfunny. Hopelessly.

MDK 2 is an arcade shooter which involves you running around shooting bad things. As easy a premise as that might be to work on, MDK 2 executes it horribly. Most of the time, your enemies simply wander around shooting at you only occasionally. Easy killing. But there's this one type of baddy which shoots blue, flaming balls which home in on you. When they hit you you fall to the ground. Then when you get up they hit you again before you hardly have time to move an inch. Therefore, although this being an arcade shooter, you'd have to resort to hiding behind corners, shooting a couple of shots, and then hiding again. Totally crappy stuff.

Speaking of crappy, the level design is horrible. The entire game is a string of winding corridors and then open areas, with the only occasional vertical movement.

Now, the last thing you would expect from an arcade shooter are puzzles. Such a feature would only slow the whole pace of the game. But MDK 2 is chock-full of them, and their quality is despicable. In fact, when you play as the Doc all you do is solve puzzles and jump a lot.

This is a sorry game to which I will not give any more of my time. Sorry.
